One of the hardest things to find when you move to a new city is a place to call your own. Rents in Nashville are very expensive, even more than I thought. I looked at a real shithole yesterday. It was convenient but somehow I had the feeling an exorcism took place there or something. My friend Mario and his "wife" are going to allow me to rent a room from them until I find the "perfect place". How cool. It's out in Kingston Springs TN (about 23 miles from the station) but now I'll get the hotel off my ass. I just need to find a bed, then all is well. All I need is a place to shit, shower and shave and just a good vibe, I ain't hard to please, ya know. Anything under $525 a month in this town is a shithole, that's for sure. Anywho, his "wife" Nancy is a web designer so maybe I will have a cool new look to the website sometime soon. That would be neat. Off to bed and back to work tomorrow.

New Song In My Head

DAYS ON THE ROAD
WRITER GRAHAM GOBLE
I remember the days on the road tryin' to get somewhere
All the time spent behind the wheel,
I remember the faces of people who did me wrong there
And they were oh so many to know
Country dates and fans who wait for hours
It's strange I don't even remember a name
Patiently they wait and see where will he run to now
And they were oh so many to know
I was born a dream chaser running away from the country that made me
Rock 'n' roll you're a home breaker turnin' my head from the family that loved me.
And I hate it, how I hate leaving you but what more can I do
Than to try and find my way ?
Carry me on to somewhere,
Send me someone who will share it all
Help me to find my peace of mind
I remember the days on the road I almost died there
Each year harder than those before
And I'll remember the faces of friends if I ever go back again,
They were also many to know
I remember the days on the road
I remember the days on the road
I remember the days on the road
I remember the days on the road
Yes I do, yes I do oh
I remember the days on the road
I remember the days on the road
and they were so many to know
Brush With Greatness Part Twelve-Jim Palmer

One of my favorite baseball players Jim "don't hate me becasue I am beautiful" Palmer. This guy in his prime could throw a baseball through the side of a barn. If I remember right, he was a very nice guy also. This was taken roughly fall of 1992 while doing the morning show from the Courtesy Diner in St. Louis. He was a judge of what we called the "Hoosier Lingerie Show" featuring the southside's "lovliest" modeling their underwear on the countertop. Steve Davis, "E", was there, too. Way too many people inside of that place, it was madness. I loved it. He was promoting his new book.
The Top 50 Commercials of The Eighties...

Ah, the eighties, I "remember" it well...didn't spend a whole lot of time watching TV much then..(too many brain cells to kill in other ways), I mean ever since they took M*A*S*H and Barney Miller off.
Someone did and made a list of their favorite commercials.
The Top Ten Air Guitar Solos?

I have been known to play a bit. Won a regional contest when I was a DJ in Denver back in 1982. (it was to "Eruption", one of the songs featured here). In fact, just this week I asked on the air if it was OK for a man my age to be playing the air guitar in the studio? My answer was...only if you play it as well as I do.
Here's a video list of someone's air guitar top ten. I can't argue with any of these songs, although I would add "Aqualung" to the list...but that is a topic for a future post.
Haven't Posted In A While

Between trying to get a handle on imaging, finding a place to live and getting my on air chops back, it has been difficult to post much (I don't have internet capabilities in the hotel I am staying). I have been reacquainted with a guy I went to radio school with. My God, that was 31 years ago. He has lived in Nashville for a long time and has invited me to stay with him and his "wife" until I find a place. How nice, that will certainly help. It is always nice to reaquaint yourself with old friends and lovers and so far, (after a very rough beginning)things have been going well. We have repositioned the station and have changed the morning show. I have been dropped into a station in transition but so far, I am weathering the storm. I need to hang on till after the holidays then the sailing will be smoother (I hope). Miss the family and can't wait till I see them again. I need to check out Nashville more, but so far, I have been too busy. I really do like the imaging part of the job description, it gives me a chance to be creative. Bob Seger tonight, so a report after that.

Major Bloodlettings Everywhere

Wilks Broadcasting in Kansas City (who bought the CBS stations) let 19 people go this week. Included were some friends of mine. Clear Channel in St. Louis let a bunch of people go a couple of weeks ago. This is a precarious business at this time. I had to move 300 miles away to find work. People have wondered how in the world I could do that but I can tell you that my father once told me that "you have to go where the work is". I know at least five people who would trade places with me in a heartbeat. I promise to never take this job for granted and to always do a break like it was the last one I would ever do. (Hell, it may be.)
May God bless my unemployed friends, especially my friend Brad, who's wife lost her job of 24 years the same day he lost his. I am lucky, I had to move but I still have a gig.
So for my friends Katey, Michelle, Kent (love ya bro), Jay, Vic, Trish, Mandy, Rob, Brad and anyone I have left out, I promise you, I will do the best I can to make you all proud of me. I'm lucky and I know it.
30 years ago today...

Tommy Bolin died. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. I was teaching radio school (I had just graduated and was employed at the time)and my friend Mike brought in the newspaper with the clipping. I thought this guy was going to be the next Jeff Beck. His CD "Teaser" still ranks (to me) as one of the all time over loooked and under rated CDs ever.
Died of a drug overdose. How sad.
RIP Tommy.

Song Stuck In My Head

This song has been stuck in my head since Monday of last week and I can't get it out, maybe a public forum will dislodge this thing and give it to you. I hope. And remember, no tag backs.
False Faces
Oil on canvas
Couplets and stanzas to divine who you are
Pencil portrayals and jealous betrayals
Get you further afar
(Chorus)
Oh, false faces and meaningless chases I travel alone
Oh, first places and calendar races I need a home
Hostile hotel walls, footfalls and phone calls
And you're on the line
Gentle coercions and bitter desertions
When the truth is a lie
(Chorus)
Lover twice yearly
That last battle nearly cost me the fight
Broke through the ice and got cut down to size
And escaped through the night
(Chorus)
Help! Please Stop!

Casino Royale

I am a huge James Bond fan and have been since I was old enough to figure out that pretty women made me tingle(I got that feeling when I found my older brother's stack of Playboys under his mattress at about 6). Sean Connery was always the epitome of cool. He now has someone to take his place. Sean and Roger were suave and debonair. Daniel Craig will kill you with his hands. I loved this movie. I got back to St. Louis just in time to have my power go out, so I went to a movie, not just any movie, but maybe the best movie I have seen in a long time. "Casino Royale" was actually the first James Bond book and this one sets up how and why he became a "007". It sets it up in back and white and then "BAM", it's non stop action for the next two thirds of the movie, the last third drags just a bit and you wonder where the story is going. Then, it hits you over the head again. Great villian, excrutiating torture scene in the middle and a "Bond" girl (who really wasn't), who is beautiful. I am not a "movie critic" worrying about the texture or lighting or any of that stuff, but my three big questions are...was it entertaining, did I enjoy the film, and did time go by fast while I was watching it? The answers to these questions are a resounding "YES"!!! Mr. Craig is now my second favorite Bond and I am eagerly awaiting the next one to see if he can out Bond Sean Connery. He's already close.
Four and a half stars out of five.

An Open Letter From Jesus?

Dear Children,
It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season. Maybe you've forgotten that I wasn't actually born during this time of the year and that it was some of your predecessors who decided to celebrate My birthday on what was actually a time of pagan festival; although I do appreciate being remembered anytime. How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own. I don't care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth just, GET ALONG AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Now, having said that, let Me go on. If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn't allow a scene depicting My birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santas and snowmen and put in a small Nativity scene on your own front lawn. If all My followers did that there wouldn't be any need for such a scene on the town square because there would be many of them all around town. Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a holiday tree, instead of a Christmas tree. It was I who made all trees. You can and may remember Me anytime you see any tree. Decorate a grape vine if you wish: I actually spoke of that one in teaching-- explaining who I am in relation to you and what each of our tasks was. If you have forgotten that one, look up John 15:1-8.
If you want to give Me a present in remembrance of My birth, here is my wish list. Choose something from it.
1. Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way My birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are terribly afraid and lonely this time of year. I know, they tell Me all the time.
2. Visit someone in a nursing home. You don't have to know them personally. They just need to know that someone cares about them.
3. Instead of writing George complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sent out this year, why don't you write and tell him that you'll be praying for him and his family this year; then follow up. It will be nice hearing from you again.
4. Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you can't afford and they don't need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of My birth, and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that I love them.
5. Pick someone that has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her.
6. Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don't know who that person is, try giving everyone you meet a warm smile. It could make the difference. Also, you might consider supporting the local Hot-Line: they talk with people like that every day.
7. Instead of nit-picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren't allowed to wish you a "Merry Christmas" that doesn't keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store didn't make so much money on that day they'd close and let their employees spend the day at home with their families.
8. If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary, especially one who takes My love & Good News to those who have never heard My name. You may already know someone like that.
9. Here's a good one. There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no "Christmas" tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don't know them (and I suspect you don't) buy some food & a few gifts & give them to the Marines, the Salvation Army or some other charity which believes in Me & they will make the delivery for you.
10. Finally if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to Me, then behave like a Christian. Don't do things in secret that you wouldn't do in My presence. Let people know by your actions that you are one of mine.
P.S Don't forget; I am the Son of God and can take care of Myself. Just love Me & do what I have told you to do. I'll take care of all the rest. Check out the list above and get to work; time is short. I'll help you, but the ball is now in your court. Do have a most blessed Christmas with all those whom you love, and remember, I LOVE YOU.
Bob Seger
I get to meet Bob next week, really looking forward to seeing him live. Back in 1984, he rocked Kemper Arena to it's foundation with one of the best shows I have ever seen. The question remains, will we get this guy...
or this guy....

With that in mind, here are my top five Bob Seger songs:
"Till It Shines"..it wasn't a hit, but it should have been. Probably his best songwriting ever.
"Hollywood Nights"..he knows my life better than I do.
"Mainstreet"...may be his best story, very visual.
"Against The Wind"...Janey was lovely, she was the queen of my nights...amen, bro.
"Travellin Man/Beautiful Loser"..genius to put these two songs together.
"Roll Me Away"...let's ride
I am looking for a great show. however, when he was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, he looked and sounded bad. He is too much of a pro not to give his best, I will certainly let you know.

"Well, there's sixteen thousand eight hundred and twenty-one mothers from Nashville." -The Lovin' Spoonful

After being on the sidelines for awhile, and not doing much this summer, I literally forgot how compelling and time consuming radio can be. Hey, I aint bitchin', this is why I got into the business. Next week, I get to meet Bob Seger again. It was 1984 when I first met him, the Tigers were in the playoffs and we talked baseball while having a glass of red wine before his show. I must admit, in the ten minutes we talked, he must have had five smokes. The station in Nashville actually gets to present shows and I will be taking some listeners backstage to meet the man. Shit, it's nice to know some things haven't changed after all these years. I have three appearances before the end of the month, and according to the Brock that rocks, I will be in line for plenty more. After the first few awkward days being in a city where you don't even know where the streets run and their names, this will be cool. Starting Monday, I will be on the air for 12 straight days. I will be spending all of my free time in the production room, trying to figure the whole thing out. The only drawback is missing the family and feeling a bit lost here. This is where God has sent me and I do not question the master.

Nashville
Well, here we are kids, live from music city USA. I got here this afternoon and immediately got homesick. This too, shall pass and I am sure that this will be a great new world here. I will be doing afternoon drive, and being a part of helping a classic hits station to acheive better numbers. I miss my family, though, and I am sure that won't be going away soon. Off to see Vanderbilt play basketball tonight and work out before then. I have to be at the station tomorrow at 9 am. I sure hope I can sleep tonight.

I leave tomorrow at 7:30 am. I am really looking forward in getting a fresh, clean slate and my adrenaline is starting to pump. Will I sleep tonight? No, it will feel like the first day of school. Didn't you hate that? "It's 3:14, if I could just get to sleep now, that would be four hours worth, I'd be OK...it's 4:14, if I could just get to sleep now, three hours would rule...." New city, new station, old boss, I want to own this city. I want to be the "mayor". With a good attitude, some time and a lot of hard work, it could happen.

When You Fumble, You Lose!

Here's the story from the Post Dispatch:
Kirkwood football coach Larry Frost doesn't want his players or coaches to wonder what might have been Saturday night. But the veteran coach knows how difficult that will be for his Pioneers.
Kirkwood lost three fumbles, which helped turn the tide in the Class 5 championship game at the Edward Jones Dome.
Running back Derrick Washington and Raymore-Peculiar took advantage and walked away with a 42-32 victory for their third straight state championship.
"I told my kids never to think about that, but they're going to do it," Frost said. "I told us coaches not to think about that, but we're going to do it. Turnovers are crucial in the game of football. We know that. They haven't hurt us all year long. We haven't had turnovers all year long. We've always won the turnover battle. Today, they got us."
Raymore-Peculiar (10-3) became the sixth team to win three straight Missouri High School Activities Association championships and the first school to do it in Class 5. "It doesn't get old, that's for sure," Ray-Pec coach Tom Kruse said. "It was one of those football games where it seemed like we kind of hung on. First of all, I have to give Kirkwood a ton of credit because they are a very, very, very talented, good football team."
But Kirkwood (10-2), which was appearing in the championship game for the first time in school history, had no answer for Washington, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior who has committed to the University of Missouri.
He rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 24 yards and another score and returned a punt 68 yards for his fifth touchdown while the game still was in doubt.
Washington has been a big part of all three title game victories.
He racked up 214 total yards (115 receiving yards, 99 rushing yards) and scored four touchdowns in last year's 43-21 victory over McCluer North in the championship game.
As a sophomore, Washington had 116 total yards (93 rushing, 23 receiving) and scored three touchdowns as Ray-Pec defeated McCluer North 37-18 to win the Class 5 title.
Kirkwood got off to a rocky start Saturday. The Pioneers fumbled away the opening kickoff, and Ray-Pec quickly turned that into seven points as Washington rushed through the right side of the defense for a 13-yard run just 34 seconds into the game.
Kirkwood answered on its next series. Quarterback Marcus Harris escaped pressure and picked up some key blocks downfield on his way to a 60-yard touchdown run with 10:13 left in the first quarter.
The Pioneers took a 14-7 lead following an interception by Robreese Williams and a 26-yard touchdown run by sophomore Kimuel Keller with 2:07 remaining in the quarter. But Raymore-Peculiar answered by scoring on four straight possessions — a 36-yard touchdown pass from Gabe Crumpley to Gavin Lutman, a 1-yard run by Washington, a 23-yard pass from Crumpley to Washington and a 65-yard run by Washington to take a 35-14 lead with 10 minutes 44 seconds left in the third quarter.
That's when Kirkwood began its improbable comeback.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to 35-21 on a 2-yard touchdown run by Delvon Adams with 7:47 left in the third quarter, then to 11 points with a 40-yard field goal by Kristopher Turek with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter.
Kirkwood turned the ball over at Ray-Pec's 13-yard line on the Pioneers' next series, which came back to hurt them after trimming the deficit to three points with 7:35 left in the game. That's when Harris scored on a 1-yard run and then connected with D'Marco Austin for a 2-point conversion to make it 35-32.
Washington ended the Pioneers' comeback bid when he returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown, his fifth of the game, with 1:59 remaining to put Raymore-Peculiar ahead 42-32.

3 Days...

Before I move somewhere I have never been. I have only visited once and the last time I moved to a city where I knew no one was 28 years ago. Can I do it? The opportunity to feel "awe" again really appeals to me. This is the test we all are looking for. Are you as good as you think you are? Can you do it again? Do you still have it in you? Do you desire it as much as you used to? Can you out work the competition again? we shall see.

Forever The Beatles, Amen.

LONDON (AFP) - Fans have rushed to buy the first "new" Beatles album for a generation -- a radical remixing of some of the group's most famous songs -- more than 35 years after the break-up of the iconic band. "Love", which has the backing of surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, comprises 26 of the Fab Four's hit songs, but many of them mixed together using previously unheard material from the studio. "I hope this will help people to hear Beatles music again," said Giles Martin, son of the group's original producer Sir George Martin who is often referred to as the fifth Beatle.Martin and his son worked for three years on the project, which forms the soundtrack to a Beatles stage show of the same name, put on since June in Las Vegas by Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil. Using archives and master tapes at the Abbey Road studios in London originally used by The Beatles, they put together songs by a complex mixture of overlaying, dubbing and synchronizing to produce sometimes startlingly new compositions. For example, elements of "Penny Lane" are mixed with "Strawberry Fields Forever", while "Blackbird" is combined with "Yesterday" in a process called a "mash-up" by sound engineers. Other track combinations on the new album include "Get Back" feeding into "Glass Onion", before weaving into the chords of "Eleanor Rigby", giving an appropriately psychedelic texture to the 1960s originals. At each stage the surviving Beatles -- plus John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia -- were consulted on the developing work, and they were almost always approving. On one occasion though, as a test, the Martins presented McCartney with a version of "Hey Jude" featuring a reggae intro. "It was a Jamaican 'Hey Jude'. You had to see his face. He just said: 'I don't think that really goes'. It was wonderful," George Martin said, according to The Guardian newspaper. In theory, the producers' golden rule was that only original Beatles music could be used. But there was one exception: an acoustic version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", for which George Martin wrote an original orchestral score. "The project was a labour of love and rounds things off. In 1965 I did my first score for "Yesterday" and this is my final score ... it's a sort of top and tail of my life," said the 80-year-old producer on Monday. The Las Vegas show, which features an international cast of 60 acrobats performing aerial gymnastics, extreme sports and urban, freestyle dance, has been a roaring success. It has been staged for the last five months in a custom-built theatre at The Mirage hotel with 360-degree seating and high definition video projections of 100-feet (30-metre) high moving images. The album's producers are reasonably confident the record will enjoy similar success, and that the late Beatles Lennon and Harrison would have approved of it.
"I think they would have liked it," said the elder Martin at the album launch. "To be honest, I believe they were there with us as we worked on it."

State Championship Game!!

I like living in Kirkwood. It has a very old fashioned small town feel about 12 miles southwest of St. Louis. It has a great school district and it seems to be a very close knit community. How cool must it be to be my daughter right about now, last month, the Cardinals win the World Series and this month...

...her high school football team plays for the state championship!! We thought last year was the year but it looks like this year is it. They play three time state champs Ray-Pec (Raymore and Peculiar two towns just south and east of KC) but Ray-Pec has lost three games this year. The game is on Saturday night at 6:30 at the Edward Jones Dome. How fun. Go Pioneers! Undefeated and now maybe champs? My high school team went a total of 7-24 the three years I was there, so this is very neat!

Random Shit

I'm going to be a grandfather again. Damn! I am very proud, but DAAAMMMMMNNN! I am much too young. Love you, Jess.

I hope good things are happening to my friend Jay. It appears so. Maybe the karma train has arrived and not departed.

It was Paul's last home game at Notre Dame. "It went by so fast", no shit, Sherlock get used to it. He's on his way to LA to see the USC game. Damn kid has done more at 22 than I have at 50.

Arriving at Chapter 27. Chapter 26 has no more pages, it's over. I hope.

I was flattered by a particular offer I received. It was to do something completely different in the radio field. I would have loved to try it, but the shift I was supposed to do was so important. I don't think that's a place where a guy learns a new craft, drive time. Now, if this guy EVER gets an overnight opening or something like that, let's roll. Very. nice. guy. GREAT CITY. Thanks, Steve.
Brush With Greatness Part 11-Saga

In 1982 and 1983, KY 102 in Kansas City conducted what was known as the "Rock Awards". The public could vote for their favorite guitar player, group, vocalist, newcomer of the year...whatever. The ballots were at the local Wendy's outlets, I believe. This was back in the day when KY102 was lke the equivalent of KSHE at that time. We owned the city. The Rock Awards were held at the Hyatt Regency and it was basically conducted like the Emmys or Academy awards. Jocks got dressed in tuxes and gave out awards with notable rock stars. At this particular rock award, we got Billy Squier to play. Billy also gave out an award with me and tried to pick me up. He was pretty drunk. We always got the band who won best newcomer to play...Quarterflash was the other best new band winner. The Awards got real expensive and disappeared after year two. They were alot of fun and the first time I ever met Steve Perry. Anyway, this is the band Saga who got the award for best new band. This must have been 1982. Saga did a couple of songs called "On The Loose" and "Wind Him Up" and another ballad hit in about 1993.
