In Praise of The Buckinghams
I was in the grocery store tonight, picking up some stuff for dinner when "Don't You Care" by the Buckinghams came on over the loud speaker. Damn, I was immediately transported back to being eleven again and to top it off, I knew every word, just like the old days. When I got home, I popped "The Buckinghams' Greatest Hits" on the old Bose Wave and sang to my heart's content. These guys were one of the best sounding bands ever. The precursor to Chicago with that horn section and those tight harmonies. They were produced by James William Guercio (the same guy who did Chicago) and they were from Chicago. I hear that four of the five original guys are still playing in rock and roll shows. I would pay money to see them, no doubt. With that in mind, my five favorite Buckinghams tunes would be these:

I like sizzling meat on the grill. Wild, huh? Anybody? Now, we all know ol' Nuge isn't by any stretch of the imagination a weirdo when it comes to an omnivorous diet.
Especially here in the great Republic of Texas, a smiling, drooling preference for succulent, protein-rich, nutritious backstrap over aromatic mesquite coals is as American and natural and right as Mom, apple pie and the flag. It's beautiful, really. But a culture war rages against such universal, self-evident truths. It would be laughable if it were not so deranged. Some weirdos actually are on a crusade to outlaw the consumption of flesh. I have musical touring associates who have been fired from their jobs with ex-Beatle Paul McCartney for sneaking a hamburger.
You heard that right. Fired for eating meat by an animal-rights maniac, hard-core vegan bass player. The entire agenda of the gazillion-dollar-financed joke known as PETA literally is dedicated to outlawing meat. Neither I, nor any hunter or meat eater on the planet, has any desire whatsoever to influence any vegetarian's choice of diet or to force them to eat meat. We are the friendly, tolerant Americans.
This is but one of many issues that represent the line drawn in the sand between liberals and conservatives. Our own intrepid opinion editor at the Trib, my friend John Young, doesn't want to simply make the choice to be unarmed and helpless for himself. He has again recently insisted that you and I must also comply with his soulless condition of unarmed helplessness in "gun-free zones." Nobody from our side wants to force anybody to have a gun or defend themselves. It is us, the conservatives, who are for individual choice.
Taxation, confiscation. As for the American left: One hears the words of Mao Tse-Tung come broiling out of the mouths of its heroes, when Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton et al unflinchingly push for "redistribution of wealth."Central Texas' own Chet Edwards has the audacity to support taxing the after-tax life savings of American families following the death of a loved one. The unfair, un-American, unconstitutional death tax literally destroys mom-and-pop businesses across the land. Think about it.
The wall that once symbolized communism is down, yet some still want to give it a shot. Dear God in heaven, help us. Recently, Danny Glover, an otherwise fine actor, embarrassingly abused his uniquely American freedoms by siding with the communist Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez to finance what clearly appears to be an anti-American propaganda film. Nice.
Meanwhile, right there in that communist country, old Hugo is shutting down an entire media network for daring to challenge his heavy handed, corrupt, dictatorial policies.
This is a leader who has proudly sided with terrorist support groups, and Danny Glover gives him a big hug. If a Venezuelan citizen were to do so with President Bush, I am confident that Chavez would not respect that individual's right to free expression.
Venezuela gives its citizens no right to free expression. Glover must be blinded by the trees in that forest. Examine the agendas of the liberal "party of peace." Its members clearly don't believe you and I are smart enough or capable of making our own choices in life.
While conservatives "live and let live," the left arrogantly thinks it knows better than we do and will burden "we the people" with more government control until we are taxed to death.
Watch them. Listen, pay attention and blow whistles.
Educate your family, neighbors, friends, co-workers and hunting buddies on how dangerous such control is against the American Dream of individual pursuit of happiness.
Throw off the shackles of government-run slavery. Stand up for individual independence. Enough is enough.
Hey, Hugo and Hillary, leave me alone.

Uh, Mr. Nugent (I own a number of your records, by the way), can we go back to a couple of points I have highlighted? The individual choice thing? I guess it's OK if you're not a mother carrying a child that will be seriously deformed and not be able to function? Yeah, that's individual choice. I know you believe in that right, huh Ted? Or what about gay people, Ted? Do you "conservatives" really want individual choice? It's OK to love whoever you want? Good, glad we cleared that up. Now, onto the "death tax" thing. Uh, Ted I think the amount of money that you get taxed on is somewhere around a million dollars. Don't know many "mom and pop" shops with that kind of loot. Ted, you have claimed to be a Christian "God fearing" man. I have heard you in concert use the Lord's name in vain so many times that it's very disheartening; there is something in the commandments about that, maybe you should check it out sometime. Let's talk about your sex life, Ted. Oh, wait let's not. Not a pretty subject, huh Mr. Nuge? One more thing, Mr. Theadocious Atrocious, if Paul McCartney had signed these guys to a contract that says they can't eat meat and then they did, in my line of business it's called "breach of contract" and they are gone. I've certainly been fired for less. While you have some valid points in your diatribe, we should really be talking about your guitar playing because basically, you are full of shit.

TPS Reports
Well, I was supposed to have my monthly report in yesterday, but having to put out fires in the morning made me move all of my appointments back and before I knew it, it was four oclock. So, I had to go in today and finish it up. I hope I did it right, I know that I had it all done then hit the wrong button and it disappeared into the mystic. D'oh! It's Been Almost A Week?
Wow, life goes fast, huh? I have been extremely busy trying to make budget, do homework, plan for tonight's big graduation party, work in the yard, etc etc.

Got to see my bud Ken Dillon last night and his lovely Tanis. I bequeathed Ken all of my show prep materials from the past ten years. It was great to see Ken (who is in town for the big Mo Broadcasters Convention) and his partner on the radio and the respective Mrs' (es). I am very envious of Ken. He does mornings in his hometown and uses his position to be a part of the community. That would be one of the very few scenarios that I would think about getting back into that business, if I could find a morning slot in a smaller town that believes in being local. I don't think they exist much anymore. You go, Kenny, I am so very proud of you.

I don't follow the NBA much. The only time I really care is when the league hits the playoffs. I am a big Spurs fan. I think Tim Duncan is one of the most fundamentally sound players ever. If you notice Tim, no tattoos or markings and he always uses the backboard. They ran a clinic the other night with Tony Parker taking the lead. Gregg Popovich has won three titles and no one seems to notice, that must be because they are not in LA, New York or Chicago. Spurs in five. Not yet, LeBron, not yet.

KMOX interviewed Ian Gillan on Thurday and it was thrilling to hear. Charlie Brennan did a great job and I am pleased that we are doing stuff like that. Heck, I'm over 50 and Deep Purple was one of the bands that got me through high school. I even heard the words "Black Sabbath" from a caller on KMOX. Zounds!

Speaking of KMOX, we did our Family Fishing Day today and the place was packed! I can't wait for next year, becuase now I have a better idea how to sell it!. Selling is hard but I am hanging in there and slowly but surely, putting some numbers on the board. Going to Edwardsville this week to drum up some business for our "Good Spirits Festival" on the 23rd. "Groovethang" is playing and they are one of my favorite local bands.

Mass tomorrow, then I am going to the Cardinals game. Great seats and maybe I can bring home a win. It is going to be a long year, I'm afraid. Drive to Shrewsbury, hit the Metrolink and away we go.

I try not to get too political on this blog (I know no one's mind is affected by what I scribble), but
I can NOT believe Dick Cheney spoke at the graduation ceremonies at West Point. Dick Cheney is a draft dodger. HE DID NOT SERVE! He had "other commitments" but yet has no problem sending others to die. Just my opinion but I believe he is an evil man who always looks like he is hiding something.
Beautiful day here in St. Louis, perfect for outside work in the yard, which was fruitful. Blessings to all who read this; may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

The Final Tribute

The Tennessean's April 5 photograph of young Christian Golczynski accepting the American flag from Marine Lt. Col. Ric Thompson is one of the most moving and emotion provoking images I have ever seen.My wife and I attended funeral services for Christian's father, Staff Sergeant Marcus Golczynski, on April 4, along with our six year-old son, dozens of Marines, and several hundred others who came to pay tribute to this fallen hero. As one would expect, many of your readers were touched by this incredible picture. Staff Sergeant Golczynski had previously served one full tour in Iraq . Shortly before his death on March 27 he wrote to his family that he had volunteered to do this a second time due to our deep desire to finish the job we started. In his letter he said, "We fight and sometimes die so that our families don't have to." Tragically, Staff Sergeant Golczynski had only two weeks remaining on his second tour. We look at the photograph of Christian every day. It is displayed prominently in our home. Our hearts ache for Christian and for all those who have lost loved ones in this controversial conflict.Our nation is at a historical crossroads. Do we call an end to the struggle in Iraq or press on? Staff Sergeant Golczynski eloquently told his son how he felt about not giving up. Perhaps there is a lesson for all of us in this man's life and the choices he made. He was undeniably a man of tremendous courage and conviction. America must now choose whether to complete the job.When looking at the face of Christian Golczynski I am reminded that doing what is right is not always easy and doing what is easy is not always right. I have never supported this war. Personally, I think we went after the wrong target at the wrong time. Osama Bin Laden's minions were the ones who flew those planes into the WTC. Saddam had nothing to do with it. That being said, I support those brave men and women who are called and serve voluntarily for our nation. My heart aches every time I hear that another brave soul is done too soon. As a brother of a man who did two tours of Vietnam, whose son is now a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, and whose nephew is now somewhere secretly in Afghanistan, my belief is we are now stuck in a place that doesn't want us there. How sad that no one questioned this operation (due to the fact that if you did, you were unpatriotic). I love my country with all my heart and feel blessed that I was born here. I am not quite sure that the people who made this decision did so under the right circumstances. God bless our troops and their families. May this excursion come to a hasty end.

Backstage Pass Number Seven
These have been pretty recent(if you can say that 14 years ago was recent). I promose to go digging and come up with some REALLY cool stuff in the future. This was at Riverport. It was really hot.
Well, This Oughtta Be Fun
I are now a college student...again. I found out that the work I did back in 1984 doesn't count anymore...damn! So, I guess I had better get going. I am taking a telecourse in Biology. The course is on the public TV station here at 4:30am on Tuesday morning. Thank God for Tivo, huh? I will let you know the progress. Next semester, Psychology and an Astromony lab.
PS. I have two books for a telecourse and they were WAY over a hundred bucks. What a racket!!
