R.I.P. Mississippi Nights

Another passage of adulthood doomed to the wrecking ball. I have seen just about everyone at Mississippi Nights, a funky club situated on the landing in St. Louis.
Poco, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, Los Lobos, John Prine, George Thorogood, The BoDeans...the list is endless really. The last show was last night.

What a cool place it was, run for years by Rich Frame and before The Pageant came on borad THE place to play in St. Louis. The gig by Robin Trower was played when the air conditioning was on the fritz. I remember it was hot and very very loud.

I am sad to see it go, but Pinnacle has purchased just about all of the land around there to build a new fancy casino. I hope it does well, it will have taken a big swath out of the history and culture of St. Louis.

thanks Rich, you wore it well.

(me...on the Mississippi Nights stage)

My band played three nights there. We opened for Shooting Star, the Rainmakers and The Jeff Healy Band. Rich Frame said that we were one of a very few opening bands that he allowed to do an encore for Jeff Healy. I sang a very bluesy version of "American Woman" that night. I am sure that's one of the reason why everyone wanted an encore...right? Right?

The Nights is where I grew up on music - there was about a six year period that I spent just about every night between there, Off Broadway, and BB's.

Now Off Broadway's changed hands (still doing some cool music, but many of the friends are gone), The Nights have ended, and only BB's remains (though it was closed for remodeling recently).

I'm not even sure that most of the people here in St. Louis really realize the institution that they've lost.

I couldn't tell you the best show I ever saw there, but the loudest was absolutely King's X. I don't think my ears ever did recover.

Don't guess I'll be hangin at the Landing anytime soon...
