Johnny Cash's Final Resting Place

On my birthday, with my friend Emily in Nashville, and after having consumed a fine cheesesteak or two, we decided to drive in the snow to see where Johnny Cash rests. I had the address and it was Yahoo to the rescue. Johnny is in a public cemetary on Johnny Cash Avenue in Hendersonville TN. It took us about 20 minutes to get there from downtown. As we were crusing through the cemetary, I stopped a young man on a backhoe who was more than thrilled to help us locate it. It seems to be a point of pride for them. As well it should be. June and he are buried on the crest of a knoll just about in the center.

Johnny's grave

Right next to him is June's

A very tasteful black bench hovers over the headstones.

The other side of the bench.

What a great way to spend a birthday afternoon.

Pee Wee Herman/Paul Ruebens

In 1983,Pee Wee Herman was pretty much a stand up comic. He had garnered a bit of recognition and I definately knew who he has through his role as the obnoxious bell hop selling hamburgers I think in a Cheech and Chong movie called 'Nice Dreams'. It was about this time that he came through Kansas City and appeared at the Uptown Theatre. At the time, the ultimate place to play in KC. We were scheduled to do an interview in the studio at about 5;30. At 5;15 this guy shows up....

...and I asked him if I could help him thinking that he had offed the receptionist and everyone else in the building and he was looking for me about something I said. 'I'm Paul Reubens, you may know me as Pee Wee'. Unbelievable, here was a guy who didn't even resemble him, smoking a cigarette and speaking in a voice so quiet that you could barely hear him.
Once we opened the mike, he was off and running as Pee Wee. I just sat there amazed at his transformation into the character all the while looking like a guy who hadn't eaten in days. He was a very nice cat and gave me very nice seats to the Uptown.
His act consisted of him going into the crowd a lot and he came over and fucked with me a couple of times. He kept calling me RadioRandy and kept winking at me. I think he had an enjoyable interview, if I remeber right, he hung around for awhile.

Someone's Top Ten Pee Wee Herman moments....some real good stuff here.

A Video of A Drunk Squirrel

Man, this is high class entertainment, huh?

R I P Billy Thorpe

Well, how sad is this...I have played 'Children Of The Sun' a thousand times. When I was in the Quad Cities at WXLP, I played that song. When I got to KY 102 in Kansas City, I played that song in heavy rotation. At KSHE, it was a KSHE classic.

Another great song by Billy is a song called 'In My Room' that made the cut to my Ipod.

Apparently, he was huge in his home country of Australia. Here is the TV report from 2/27.

Here is a cool video for 'Children of the Sun'. I haven't heard the song in a while and the memories were vivid. Younger days.

His official website is here.

According to Wikipedia, he returned to Australia and captured a 'rock legend' status, a sort of father figure, and apparently Oz is crushed.

alone guy food part one

Guys, if you are by yourself, there are a number of things you can cook that are easy and yummy.
CASE IN POINT...
Grilled cheese and fried eggs..this is a Raley masterpiece.

Get a griddle and putin it a shmush of butter or non fat spread, let melt. Take the outside of one side of a piece of bread and sop up the melted goo. Use that as the top of the sandwich and put the bottom on what's left in the pan. Put a couple of slices of cheese in between and cook on low heat. Halfway through the process use more shmushed butter or spread or PAM and crack open a couple of eggs, cooking them over easy. Both things should finish cooking at the same time. Put the eggs on top of the grilled cheese sandwich, cut open and enjoy the cooked to perfection embryoes with the bread and cheese all melted together. For a special treat and for those not watching their weight, eat your weight in BarBQ chips. It's all good. Extra points for drinking a glass of Chardonnay in a regular drinking glass. Now, that's being a Renaissance man like me.

Next up...Mac and cheese.

POST NUMBER 600!!!

Couldn't think of a better way to celebrate number 600 than with a link to Pete Townshend's blog.
It's right here.

"Deadwood"

a>

I am hooked on this f*(king series, bigger than a fish on a m*7herf^%king line. These c*&ks$#kers are as about as real as they can possibly f$%king get. I am at the m&*herf@#king fourth f%$king edisode. The plague has hit these c(*ks@#kers and it's starting to f%^king get real f#$king good.

Played basketball today, only one game. We lost and it sure takes awhile to get the court again. Worked out last night, also. I have dedicated myself to go kicking and screaming into old age.

I am so addicted to nuts, and my thing now is salted nuts in the shell. Any kind of nuts, it doesn't matter. cashews (or butternuts as my grandmother called them) are the worst.

Props to Melanie Balcomb, head basketball coach at Vanderbilt. She stopped by the studio and played her favorite Jethro tull songs (she's a big fan) and now I have become a fan of hers. Nice lady, good coach. Go Lady Dores.

Billy Joel Feb 21st Gaylord Entertainment Center

This guy is so good. I started listening to Billy Joel in 1973, one year before Piano Man hit the chart. It was a Saturday and I was visiting my local head er, uh I mean "record shop" and they had "Cold Spring Harbor" on the record player and I heard "She's Got A Way" and "Everybody Loves you Now" and I was hooked.
I was really pleased when "Piano Man" came out and "The Stranger" is an absolute masterpiece. His "Sgt. Pepper". I have been fan and seen him two other time. Once at the Arena in 1986 and he.blew.me.away. Even though the output in the 90's was not his best, I still liked his stuff.
I saw him last Wednesday in Nashville and again, he has confirmed that he is one the best entertainers of our generation.
He started with "The Angry Young Man" as he has the other two times I saw him. Imagine my pleasure when the second song was "Everybody Loves You Now". Other highlights include his banter with the crowd(calling "The Bridge" a piece of junk was pretty ballsy)and saying that being bald didn't mean "less hair, but more head".
The only letdowns were
a) "Big Shot". I hate that song.
b) "We Didn't Start The Fire". I hate that song worse.
c) "Highway To Hell" sung by his roadie, "Chainsaw". WTF?
All the hits were there and some very nice surprises. "Root Beer Rag" was fun and "Zanzibar" was a real treat. "Shameless" was appropriate for Nashville since Garth had such a hit with it.
He did one encore (as everyone should do). "Only The Good Die Young", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" (His Stairway To Heaven and my personal favorite) and, of course "Piano Man". The segue from "Keeping The Faith" to "River of Dreams" was flawless. "New York State of Mind" was it's usual awesome. Things he could have played..."Captain Jack", "Goodnight Saigon" and "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" but, yet, he gave us over two hours of great great stuff. I highly recommend this tour.
Thanks Youtube.

This Is "Pac Man" Jones

He is an "upstanding" member of the Nashville community.
He is very rich and he runs very fast.

Just a quick taste of this "quality" citizen of the NFL community ...

10/2003: Jones was sentenced to one year in jail following a bar fight while he was a student at West Virginia University, but the sentence was suspended and he was placed on two years probation. His probation was scheduled to end on Thursday.

4/27/05: Adam "Pacman" Jones was at Club Blaze in Conley, Ga., around 3 a.m. ET on April 27 when officers responded to a fight involving two women. Andrea Akins, a supervisor at the club, told police she was punched in the mouth by a woman who was with Jones. But she later told police the woman "had nothing to do with the altercation," a police report said.

Both women were handcuffed, but were released without any arrests.

7/13/05: The Tennessee Titans' top draft pick, Adam "Pacman" Jones, was arrested Wednesday on charges of assault and felony vandalism stemming from a nightclub altercation. Jones surrendered to Nashville police at Titans headquarters Wednesday morning. Jones was in handcuffs, a white T-shirt and light blue exercise pants when he appeared smiling before a night court commissioner, who set bond at $7,000. The charges included one felony vandalism charge and two misdemeanor counts of assault.

9/5/05: The annual Nashville Sports Council Kickoff Luncheon was held at the Renaissance Hotel. Among the 800 guest was none other than Pacman Jones ... later that evening Jones was counseled for a loud verbal tantrum when he was told to wait in line for his vehicle. He also refused to pay for any valet services used that evening.

10/25/05: In a petition filed by the state, it was alleged that Jones has not made regular and sufficient contact with his probation officer and that he did not report his July arrest in Nashville in a timely fashion.

Judge Robert Stone in Morgantown granted the probation extension of 90 days, though the state requested for it to be extended up to a year.

4/11/06: Nine people were arrested on suspicion of having roles in two major drug rings that trafficked cocaine and marijuana in Sumner and Davidson counties, including a Nashville man with possible ties to Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, authorities said yesterday.

Officers from Davidson and Sumner counties seized 1,653 pounds of marijuana, 128 pounds of cocaine, more than 20 vehicles and $608,000, police said.

4/18/06: Police say Pacman was one of 12 or more people that gathered at a gas station in Nashville when a fight broke out and gunshots were fired.

A surveillance camera shows that Pacman was identified as being in the crowd and he confirmed that fact to police.

8/23/06: Jones was also accused of simple assault by Toya Garth, who said Jones spit in her face. Garth said Jones "got very close to her and spit in her face, and which point she stated she spit back in his face,'' according to statement taken by police.

After Jones was asked to leave, police said he began yelling profanities and was arrested by Officer Matt Baldwin.

"Mr. Jones was given several opportunities to leave, he just wouldn't do it,'' Lt. Alvin Baird said. "As he was leaving he hung out the passenger side of the vehicle and began yelling profanities at the security at Sweetwater Saloon, and he put us in a place where we had to do something. Jones was also said to have bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol.

He was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

He was also being questioned and is under suspicion involving a shooting over the All Star NBA weekend in Las Vegas. He has hired Ray Lewis' former attorney for his defense.

Middle Tennessee is a very conservative part of the country and I will lay you ten to one odds he will not be a Tennessee Titan next year. Thank God

This Is How We Sell Music in 2007

No doubt she's a beautiful woman. Can she sing? Sure. Are we focusing on the music anymore? No. She's sexing it up. Good luck to her, she'll need it.

Only You Know and I Know

...I've Got A Never ending Song Of Love...

This is me with Bonnie Bramlett, one of my favorite singers in the whole wide world. This was taken at the Mike Reilly Benefit on my birthday. Read about her here. What a sweetheart. Terrific lady.
Thanks for the birthday present, Bonnie

This Is My Life

i got my membership at blockbuster today. i guess that means i am now a resident. i picked up the first two 'deadwood' shows. damn. these guys don't fuck around with saying the word fuck now do they...i will explore this series more.

i guess friday night lights has bit the dust. too bad. i thought this was a pretty cool show. then they started moving it around all over. it's no wonder why the tv ratings have dropped. the shit stays and the good get moved or on the tv three times a week. rip friday night lights.

what a cool picture.

i think i have finally found a basketball game. played with some guys today that were pretty cool. we will see if this works. i hadn't played since november and it really showed. i made my first shot and then none after that.

getting caught up

you can tell i am back in good old sylvan park. sorry about the lower case, but i think it gives the post character, but that's just me.

hey jessie, you don't know how proud of you i am. and i officially, in words, take back what i said to you when you decided to switch your degree in the middle of the stream. i believe the words were....uh, what the hell you gonna do with that...you are working in the field of your study...cool huh. it will be hard to give up when that day comes. congrats and much love and respect

uh...this caused an accident. i used to call it 'comfortable'.

this is the picture we are sending out by email. you should have seen the first one...ew.

i love the grammys. its one place where you can see all types of music in one night.
my faves were the way the chicks kicked all ass. i think i posted this before but these gals can really play and sing and i don't care about their politics. in fact, i like charlie daniels too. second favorite part was christina aguilera singing...it's a mans world...and just killing it. that woman can just.flat.sing. real easy on the eyes, too

this is michael amante. he can really sing. he is appearing in st. louis at the touhill and apparently is quite the master. up there with pavarotti. i heard him on kmox and someone asked him who his favorite singers were. he immediately said steve perry and freddie mercury. he said that steve perry had the most powerful voice he had ever heard. if you watch steve and really listen to him, he is very powerful. i just thought it was very cool that he mentioned them right off the bat. i got to thinking...who else has that voice. paul rodgers was the very first name that came to mind. then ian gillan.

so let me get this straight, other than the three stooges, the latest 'i could be the baby's daddy' is the old coot that anna nicole smith married. someone has supported the fact the baby could be from the old mans gak. man, oh man, he was ninety and that means it still worked. i am impressed.

february 2007 part 2

SHOCKED...SHOCKED I TELL YOU
many years ago, on a morning show i did, we used to do a bit called 'death pool'. at the beginning of the year, people would call and nominate someone they think would die that year. i have had anna nicole since 1997. very tragic, but not surprising. this woman was fucked up for a long time. the question remains, who gets instantly rich and the most important thing...what about the baby

THE EAGLES...

this is one of my very favorite bands. the first time i heard 'take it easy' on am radio, i immediately went out and bought the album. also that day, i bought jo jo gunne, please don't ask me why i remember that. enjoyed 'desperado'. LOVED'on the border', that was the clincher lp for me and with the release of 'one of these nights' and then 'hotel california' at the age of 20, these guys knew mt life better than i did. here are my top five eagles songs...

1. 'one of these nights'-without a doubt my favorite song by them
2. 'hotel california'-a true american rock and roll classic
3. 'on the border'-sweet unknown ass kickin guitar solo here
4. 'those shoes'- from what i gather, done in one take. thanks bob heil
5. 'take it to the limit' i wonder what randy meisner is up to

i drove all the way to comiskey park in chicago to see them in 1976. the bill was...pablo cruise opened the show..i really used to like that band a lot...then sammy hagar, boston...their first tour...they were ok, steve miller, then the eagles.
i then saw them in 1980 in kansas city. after that, in 1997, i was one of the saps that paid 95 bucks to hear joe walsh do 'ordinary average guy'. that tour was frustrating. while it was excellentto hear 'lying eyes' and such, i wasn't thrilled to pay that money to hear glen frey play 'smuggler's blues'.

'THE POINT OF MY RANT IS THIS...'
don henley has announced that the new eagle's album 'leaving the land of eden' will only be available at wal mart for the first YEAR before other outlets get the chance to carry it. what...the...fuck. mr. golden pond don henley has turned into a hypocrite. ok, then. you guys haven't done a decent song since 1979. 'hole in the world' sucked. so did 'get over it' and the other piece of shit whatever it was. never has such a band i adored and admired fallen so low. don, fuck you.

some days are like diamonds, some others...

so i get this laptop from craigslist and i talk to the guy; the kid says its a great computer and he is moving to a place where he doesn't need it because his family has plenty. ok, then. i buy it. three weeks later, my shift key is gone, also use of the at symbol, parentheses, etc. this is gonna suck. talk to the computer place on my way to work. 135 bucks just to look at it.woof 'if i could make an exclamation mark here, i would'.

today was a tough day. we are now broadcasting in hd. that's very cool and they have changed the monitors in the studio to receive the hd signal. it sounds very very different. really crisp high end. i like that. apparently the feed to my traffic guy was on delay and the first report was a clusterfuck. while messing with the feed, one of the engineers switched one of my switches. it was painful to hear the dj crash and burn. in primetime. b-u-m-m-e-r.

so, if you could have dinner with anyone you wanted dead or alive, who would you dine with'i would put a question mark in here if i could'...easy for me..jesus christ. 'what's the buzz, tell me whatsa happenin'....

second...my brother. really miss him

third...mom and dad

fourth...teddy roosevelt..hey i'm a fan...we'd probably hoist a few

fifth...jessica biel. sorry.

The Rat Pack at the Sands

One of the perks of the biz is that I get to go to cool stuff. Last night, I went to the traveling company of 'The Rat Pack Live at the Sands'. Incredible. My mother would have loved this. She was the biggest Dean Martin fan ever. These guys were great. Frank was played by a brit and so was Dean. Frank and Sammy even looked like their idols. GREAT band, great music and it's hard to believe that we are so politically correct now. This was set at the Sands in 1962 at the height of the Rat Pack popularity. I really liked this show. These guys nailed it.

superbowl junk

I make bad ass mah-fuggin'chili. Especially when it has been frozen and co-agulated for a while. I would give you the recipe but then I would have to...you know..

Hey Indy, nice job coming out in the cold. It's says a lot about a city that doesn't burn itself down. When the Rams won the Superbowl, the only arrest was for some clown that fell through a plate glass window. I think Nashville's turn is coming and soon.

I watched the big game with four monks. One brother and three priests, one from England that knew nothing of the game. By the middle of the second quarter, he had it down pretty well. All good people, really. It was all good.

billy joel came in at 97 seconds, right on the line and i really wonder what happened to the guy. i don' remember him like that...stevie nicks sounded funky, but i thought prince rocked his hiney off.

Stuff From England

Just some stuff from England I foung lying around today. The place where I stayed is there along with tickets to the Churchill War Room and a train pass form the airport.
Notice is says "25 pounds"...that's about $47. One way.

While at Worth Abbey, I was looking at the paper (their only contact with the outside world) and I noticed that Patti Boyd Harrison had a photography exhibit at a funky place called The Proud Gallery in a very bohemian part of the city. I couldn't afford the pictures ($2000 was the cheapest), I got some souvenirs. Postcards from the Gallery.

My man Winston. England would probably be speaking German without him. He drank whiskey every morning and helped win the war. My man. From Chartwell, his home.

Junk Between My Ears

Tonight, we are entertaing a monk from England. Father Rod has only been to the US one other time to do a retreat just south of San Francisco (not a bad deal at all). I met with him last night at the annual school fund raiser. Seems like a nice chap but was completely unprepared to experience single digit temperatures. "It certainly takes your breath away", he said last night. It certainly does, father. I like to call it "refreshing". He seems to get the Superbowl thing, after all, you really can't get any more rabid fans than the Brits. I tried to explain as much as I could about Superbowl Sunday, but he will get here at four, so we will have to chat then.

My prediction: Colts 23 Bears 21. Sorry, Coop. I think it's Peyton's year. So, lay your bets on the Bears.

Speaking of bets, Billy Joel was talking this week about how he is placing a bet on the length of the National Anthem. Seems there is a bet for that. He said that the over/under on the length of the Anthem is 97 seconds. Billy also said he can do it in 87 seconds and will bet accordingly. So, will he place that bet or just force eveyone else to place that bet and then he gets more for coming in over? That will be interesting. I will try and remember to time it.

I was looking at my friend Cooper's blog and he has posted a survey that says that many Americans think 2007 is the year we make contact. When I was a young man growing up on the farm, my bedroom faced the southwestern sky, and I had a wide, panoramic view of the stars. Being in the middle of nowhere, on certain nights, you could see literally thousands of stars, very clearly. With the aid of a telescope, a guy could spend hours and hours plotting the stars and just looking. One winter night when I was 12, the sky was especially full of stars. I noticed someting wasn't quite right. In the lower left hand sky, three very bright lights had congregated and they were pulsating. After looking at them for about 5 minutes, I pissed my pants when they all took off in different directions. I literally thought I was having a heart attack. At twelve. I, obviously, have never forgotten that and I never will. What does it mean? I am not sure. All I know is that may life was different after that.

MORE SUPERBOWL STUFF...who's gonna show you this stuff? ME!

The Top 10 Scandals in Superbowl History. According to RADAR.

No..no, not these guys. If they ever did a movie about these guys, they would call it "Punters and Kickers Gone Wild" and that's the name of the article...funny, I thought I heard it somewhere else.

The guys at "Cracked" magazine have done it again. Here's a list of the "wussiest" Superbowl halftime performances. Pretty funny.

Leaving...

I can't believe the time is coming as quickly as it is. I almost get a panic attack when I think my baby is getting ready to walk out the door to college. About 5 months is it. The routine of preparing for this event is breaking my heart. Forms to fill out, money to be sent and the transition to an empty nester makes me wonder where the time has went. It's incredible how fast it's going and how it continually spins faster and faster, like a carnival ride that makes you want to throw up...literally. I'm dizzy and I want to get off. But.I.can't. All of her "used to be little" friends are going all over the country. From USC to Clemson to Temple, they are breaking up that little gang of theirs. I am witnessing what we all learned in watching "The Lion King". It IS the cycle of life. But, for brief shining moment, I'd like to return to her being in fifth grade and Dad still being cool. A moment in time never to be realized..in this lifetime, anyway, maybe again in the next. I can only pray.
