Segue from hell

I heard this disastrous segue on a station in Des Moines just the other day. They went from "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross into "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol with no interruption. I thought my bag of Sun Chips and Diet Mountain Dew was going to come back up my nose. The radio station was called "My 95"..My God!

A Rite of Passage

My daughter got her drivers' license on the first try. Of course, Dad now looks somewhat like this...

...Man, what happened to the time? She was a little girl just yesterday and now..She has a great instructor so, I am proud of her and terrified at the same time.

New Orleans

I have never been there. I applied for a job there once, but nothing ever happened. As The Pretenders would say...my city is gone. Unbelievable and heartbreaking. The song "Heart of The Night" by Poco keeps running through my mind..

In the heart of the night
In the cool southern rain
There's a full moon in sight
Shining down on the Pontchartrain

And the river she rises
Like she used to do
She's so full of surprises
She reminds me of you
In the heart of the night

There's a nightbird singing
Right on through till the dawn
And the streets are still ringing
With people carrying on

It's been so long waiting
Just to be here again
Anticipating
All the time I could spend
In the heart of the night down in
New Orleans
In the heart of the night down in
New Orleans

And I trust in your love never
falling down
And I trust in your love
Just like I do in this town
never falling down

And I'm so glad to be back in
New Orleans
Please don't wake me, don't
shake me,
If this is only just a dream
It's the only place I can face
that feels so right
Below that Dixie moon and loving
you

In the Heart of the Night

From the "Legend" CD, which has been since 1979, one of my favorites. I am also reminded of "The City of New Orleans" written by Steve Goodman and Fats Domino's "Walkin To New Orleans" And the song that Aaron Neville sang on "Good Morning America" is called "Louisiana 1927" and it was written by Randy Newman.
God love these people, they will never get their city back. Gutwrenching to say the least.

This is funny..

I can always count on my friend Jay Philpott to come up with cool stuff, this is no exeption. I found this very amusing:

Rock and Roll Thesaurusized by Christopher J. Falvey
ROCK & ROLL BY LED ZEPPELIN
It has come to pass an extended era from the time when I swayed and revolved,
It has come to pass an extended era from the time when I performed the leisurely walk.
Ooh, allow me to obtain it in return, allow me to obtain it in return,
Allow me to obtain it in return, little one, where I approach from.
It has come to pass an extended era, come to pass an extended era,
Ensued an extended isolated, isolated, isolated, isolated, isolated occasion. Agreed it has.

"Yesterday"
BY THE BEATLES
In the recent past, every one of my dilemmas gave the impression of being so distantly absent.
At the present, it seems as though they're at this time to hang about.
Oh, I accept as true the recent past.
Abruptly, I'm not partially the gentleman I used to exist as.
There's a silhouette suspended on top of me.
Oh, the recent past approached abruptly.

"My Generation"
BY THE WHO
The populace attempts to place us behind
(Discussing on the subject of my age group)
Simply since we become known
(Discussing on the subject of my age group)
Belongings they do give the impression of being dreadfully chilly
(Discussing on the subject of my age group)
I anticipate I will expire previous to when I become aged
(Discussing on the subject of my age group)
This is my age group
This is my age group, infant

"Purple Haze"
BY JIMI HENDRIX
Violet mist completely in my intellect
Recently, effects simply don't give the impression of being identical
Carrying on humorously; however, I am not acquainted with the reason
Pardon me at the same time as I make out with the atmosphere
Violet mist altogether in the region of
Don't recognize if I'm approaching happy or depressed
Am I content or in desolation?
Suchlike it is, that lass placed a magic charm on top of me
Assist me
Assist me
Oh, no, no

Musical Mulligans

A friend of mine and I had a conversation earlier this year about musical mulligans, you know, people that you like listening to that your friends give you a free pass on. I have two. Neil Diamond. Sorry, but I thought this guy had it all from "Cherry, Cherry" (I was 11 when that song came out and I thought there was some sexual reference there..stupid kid) all the way to "Do You Know What I Mean" in 1975. The rest of his stuff since then has been tripe. Just take a look at the cover of "Hot August Night".
I wanted to look like that. I missed. John Denver.
First off, I DID look like him in high school. The first time I heard "Take Me Home Country Roads", I liked him. "Rocky Mountain High" was on the radio the night of my first sexual experience with the woman who turned out to be my first wife. "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" is just one of the best songs, ever. Sorry to hear that he faced huge demons later in his life, and sadly, is no longer here. When I would go the my favorte record store and pick up the latest by Led Zeppilin or Blue Oyster Cult or Deep Purple or Sabbath or whatever, there was probably a Neil Diamond or John Denver album on the bottom, you sure didn't want your friends to see it.

It's Been One Of Those Weeks

Not a good week at the Raley ranch. I think that I have been witnessing "Katrina overload". It is horrifying to see what has happened there. Whatever your political persuations, this is a country consisting all of us. The government (local, state and national) have let those people down. New Orleans has never been a city that was noted for it's easiness to navigate by car, so a lot of those people didn't have one. A lot of them couldn't get out. They are stuck. It is just really deflating to see that our priorities are elsewhere and not in taking care of our own. In the beatitudes, it talks about "...blessed are the poor, blessed are the meek, blessed are the peacemakers.." and funny, that's not what this country is about. This country has turned into "I got mine, screw you if you don't." I hope we wake up. I found out earlier that my brother in laws partner has lymphoma. I am saddened. These guys have been together longer than anyone else in the family. (some threat to marriage, huh?). He is a wonderful man and I am praying very hard for him to be OK. I wrecked my car in KC on Wednesday night at an intersection that I have been through 100 times. It's a dangerous interesection and I should have known better. The girl that hit me is 19 and she was frightened. She reminded me of my own daughter. So, for the last two days, I have been dealing with wrecking a car in one city and living in another. Not fun. But, at least I don't live in New Orleans.

"LET IT BE ME"

I was enjoying some Direct TV music channels tonight when the song "Let It Be Me" came on the classic country channel. Hey, growing up on the farm, before The Beatles, there were Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Cowboy Copas (..."I'm goin' back to Alabam"), Jim Reeves, and Porter Waggoner (among others). anyway, I listened to the Willie Nelson version and thought, damn, I have heard that song before...but where? It seems that the Everly Brothers did it, Elvis and Bob Dylan covered it. Wow, that's a hell of a legacy there...Elvis AND Dylan?
Here are the words...
God bless the day I found you
I want to stay around you
And so I beg you
Let it be me
Don't take this heaven from one
If you must cling to someone
Now and forever
Let it be me
Each time we meet love,
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
Tell me, what would life be?
So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you'll always
Let it be me
They don't write 'em like that anymore....

The End of The World As We Know It...

This is a picture of the person who holds down the number one position on the Top 100 album chart. That's right, it is a greastest hits package from Hillary Duff. Hillary Duff? The girl from "Cheaper By The Dozen?'. Hell, I didn't even know that she had ANY CDs out. Oh, come to find out that she only has two albums. Two? and she gets the greatest hits treatment? What's next..the best of Ashlee Simpson? I was pretty sure pop music passed me by when Milli Vanilli hit the top of the charts..it is now been confirmed.

Shooting Star

The first time I saw them was the "End of the Decade" Show at Memorial Hall on 12/31/1979. I became a fan very quickly. Billboard Magazine ("freakin Billboard magazine"!!!) said that this was "the best debut by an American Band since Boston" since Boston?? You bet. I talked to Van The other day, Steve Thomas is one of my favorite people, Bill Guffey is...well, Bill Guffey, Mr. Verlin IS the man, Keith Mitchell filled big shoes with the departure of Gary West, and I think that these guys were another band that never got their due. Huge in K.C., St.Louis (it was KWK that played them), Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago and various places around, they were prone to horrible luck when it came to record companies. So,with that in mind, some of my fave SS tunes are:
"Last Chance" epic mofo
"Rainfall"
"Hollywood"-played on WLS in Chicago for pete's sake
"Summer Sun"
"Little by Little"-little known gem
"Bring It On"-one of MY favorites
"Wild In The Streets"-rock and roll the place!!!
You guys rule!!

An arm and a leg..

As one of its first orders of business, the Senate will hold a hearing to examine the causes of the price increases, and oil executives might be summoned to testify."You can safely predict, with more accuracy than any TV weatherman, that the first blizzard of the year will be the blizzard of gas price legislation introduced this September when Congress comes back to town," said Stuart Roy, a former House GOP leadership aide"-from the AP. What will happen then? The same thing that has happened before, the oil company representatives will bitch slap the hell out of the Congress, threatening to withhold campaign contributions. The Congress will then throw up their hands and say "there is nothing we can do". Exxon-Mobil had profits last quarter of $4.7 billion(with a "b"). And what did the pres do before he ran for governor of Texas?...oh, yeah, he was an oil man, Cheney, too. Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da..life goes on..

Today's log Stardate 8242005

Today, I find myself in Madison Wisconsin. I am proud to say that the company I work for (Learfield Comunications) now carries the sports programming for 3 of the top 10 party schools in America. Thank you, thank you very much. I happen to like Madison a lot. Good radio here...the "Jack" station, (Charley@105.1) does it very well, and it is very eighties based (in laymans terms, they lay a lot of music from the eighties). I did hear in Madison what I thought was the segue from hell..."Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town, by Kenny Rogers into "Don't You Want Me Baby" by the Human League. Brutal. I am in Milwaukee again tomorrow and in Reedsburg WI, along with Dubuque and others on Friday.

Chicago Skyway

For some reason, thoughout my life, I have had bad dreams about driving in the air and on the water. Weird stuff where I always DIE! I do not like crossing on this road. It is a mile in the air and it goes on forever (not really) but it gives me the willies. To top it all off , I have to pay THEM to drive on it.

Idiot...

...and not a Christian. I hate political discussions because anymore, there is no common ground. Either we must disagree completely or agree completely. Pat Robertson (supposed Christian) has called for the killing of another person. Pro life only when its convenient? Idiot and hypocrite.

Sunday Afternoon Sports

I have a ton of stuff I have to do. Work in the yard, in the office, in the basement. But here I sit in the office, watching the Bird-Magic weekend on ESPN classic. Before Micheal, before Shaq, it was Bird, Magic, Parrish, Worthy, McHale, McAdoo, Ainge, etc. etc. I was watching game 4 of the 1984 championships that went into overtime. It makes me realize how good these guys were. A made midrange jumpshot is so beautiful, especially if it is a bank shot. Just like Mr. Wooden teaches. If that isn't enough, the Cardinals are on Tv later, and if that is not enough, the Little league World Series is on. The team from Davenport, Ia. is in the tournament. Davenport is the big daddy of the Quad Cities. The team has already lost one game, and for some reason, any team that is entered in a national deal from the Quad Cities is doomed. I will keep you informed how it turns out. That would be very cool if they did well. Good luck to them! ..(there's the kiss of death...)
It really wasn't my day...Davenport lost big time, the Cardinals lost, and the Celtics lost the game I was watching. Don't ask me to root for your team.

Al Stewart

I was getting my extra mile in today, and the Ipod hit on a song by Al Stewart. It was "Where Are They Now?" I can't tell you how much I enjoy this guy. Of course, I think everyone's first taste of him was "Year of The Cat" (me, too), but he's been making music since 1967. I have followed his career and got a real thrill when he signed my "Year of The Cat" LP a few years ago. He is a master wine collector and probably doesn't like dealing with the hassles of the road, but I sure am glad I saw him. Extra bonus: his guitar player for many years was Peter White (another excellent guitar player that you have never heard of). Peter is now HUGE with the Smooth Jazz genre.
My top five Al Stewart songs (as of today):
1. "Year of The Cat"
2. Don't Forget Me
3. "Time Passages"
4. "On the Border"
5. "Last Days of The Century"
BTW, Al is the only person I have ever heard use the word "jackdaw" and make it rhyme. He gets extra points for that.

So, what movie is this from?

SMays, I stole your stuff...it's good stuff, though.
"Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll take a shot. Say I'm working at the N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, 'cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people that I never met and that I never had no problem with get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Send in the marines to secure the area" 'cause they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number was called, 'cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some kid from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass. And he comes home to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. They're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and fuckin' play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's walking to the fuckin' job interviews, which sucks 'cause the schrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorroids. And meanwhile he's starvin' 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. I figure, fuck it, while I'm at it, why not just shoot my buddy, take his job and give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president."

Name the movie, (1997) win a prize!!! Pretty damn straight on and way before their time.

Way to go Bobby and you too, Keith

NEW YORK - While some cable TV hosts are making their living off the Natalee Holloway case this summer, Bob Costas is having none of it.
Costas, hired by CNN as an occasional fill-in on "Larry King Live," refused to anchor Thursday's show because it was primarily about the Alabama teenager who went missing in Aruba. Chris Pixley filled in at the last minute."I didn't think the subject matter of Thursday's show was the kind of broadcast I should be doing," Costas said in a statement. "I suggested some alternatives but the producers preferred the topics they had chosen. I was fine with that, and respectfully declined to participate."Costas' manager declined to elaborate on what Costas didn't like about the topic. Thursday's guests included Beth Holloway Twitty, the girl's mother; a television reporter; and an investigator in the case. Seven of the show's 10 guests talked about the missing girl, the other segments were about the BTK killer.
The Holloway case has been a big attraction on cable news networks during a slow news period, with Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren getting record ratings as she's paid almost nonstop attention to it. Reports of Costas' decision first surfaced on the mediabistro.com Web site on Friday."There were no hard feelings at all," Costas said. "It's not a big deal. I'm sure there are countless topics that will be mutually acceptable in the future."Wendy Walker, senior executive producer of "Larry King Live," described it as a mutual decision for Costas not to do the show because he was uncomfortable with the subject matter."We love having Bob ... and since `Larry King Live' covers an extremely extensive palate of subjects, there will always be shows that he will enjoy hosting," she said. The NBC Sports personality, also host of "Costas Now" on HBO, had agreed to be host for about 20 editions of "Larry King Live" this year. He's done six, the network said. His decision is reminiscent of Keith Olbermann, the former sportscaster who left his MSNBC news show in the late 1990s in part because he was asked to repeatedly cover the Monica Lewinsky story. Olbermann is back now for his second run at MSNBC.

Just reminiscing...

about stuff like head shops. I don't know if you had these where you were, but for some reason, there were a number of them in the Quad Cities. I think that is why I like incensce so much. It reminds me of high school. Head shops were the place that you could buy all sorts of cool stuff. If you were a stoner, you had all your up to date fancy dancy ways to consume your consumables. I, myself, enjoyed the various weird tunes that were paying in various head shops and the weird records they would sell. I remember getting turned on to guys like Steve Hillage and especially his "Fish Rising" LP. The first time I heard Mahavishnu or Kansas or Gong or BTO was in a head shop. I always enjoyed the "underground" comics like the "Fabulous Furry Freak Bros.","Captain Guts" and others that when my mom found them, she about lost her mind. My two alltime favorites were "The Curiousity Shoppe" in downtown Davenport and one called "The Church" in downtown Moline. Excuse me, while I enjoy this patchouli stick right now.

Frontier House

I was thinking tonight about this show that was on Public Television about 3 1/2 years ago. I became hooked quickly. This is the story of three families that are travelling by stagecoach and basically put out in Eastern Montana and then told..."you're on your own." How would you do if you had to live like they did back then? I grew up on a farm, so I hope I would fare better than most. I kept saying to the one guy on the show that he should spend every spare second cutting wood. But, he didn't listen. One couple couldn't cope and divorced. This was an excellent show and I was very sorry to see it end. I wonder what happened to those people. In my opinion, the best reality show I have ever seen. "Frontier House"

On the road

So, here I am in Rockford Il. I always used to think Rockford was cool. The perfect family lived there throughout my childhood. It was where my cousins lived (and some still do). I thought they had everything that I didn't growing up. Cool house, cool family. Then, after all this time, you realize that they had as much shit in their life as I did. It was just a different kind of shit. What is a normal family? Do they even exist? I think normal is pretty abnormal. All of us have our scars and our battles and ALL of us have to walk through fields of shit to get to the good stuff. And sometimes after reacjhing the good stuff, more shit happens. They are good people and I enjoy being with them. I don't feel as ulterior around them as I used to. It has been a busy day. I started today in Green Bay and finished it in Rockford. In between was Milwaukee. I got to hear an old buddy of mine on the radio in Milwaukee, that was very cool. He sounded much better than I could ever have been. It's kind of a bummer, but I am proud of him. Milwaukee is a cool city, not just "Chicago's most northern suburb." I had a decent day.

Kyle Riley

Damn it, I lost another one. One of my favorite people in the world passed last week. I didn't know about it until today. Kyle was a hell of a guitar player and a great, humorous, natural sounding radio announcer. Kyle and I teamed up at KFMH in Muscatine Iowa, where, at the time, was the finest free form AOR station ever. It was literally a place where you could walk into, do an airshift and know that somewhere, you made someone happy with a song or a request. Anything you want at any time. Like radio used to be. Kyle and I teamed up and did the "Kyle Riley Randy Raley Ravenous Record Review" (complete with sound effects) on New Years Eve in 1977. I had not seen Kyle for a long time when my new job took me back to Muscatine. I happened to stop in at the old place and it is in the exact same spot it was when I was there. Same layout and actually some of the same people. It was like walking into a time machine. It was then that I found out my friend Kyle had been battling brain cancer for a while. I called and we agreed to meet, but I could tell he wasn't the guy I once new. There are very few men in my life I tell I love them. Kyle was one guy I told the last time I saw him, which was the first part of May. He died of brain cancer on Wednesday of last week. He was buried on Friday. I think I would like to see his wife Sue. A true gentlemen and talent, you will be missed, bro.

Ad campaigns

Maybe I am not the person that they are targeting (I think I would be though). I don't get the latest ad campaign from US Cellular. I guess I don't get the appeal of Joan Cusack. She seems to act like your drunk sister in law at the wedding whose behaviour borders on boorish. Hair is unkempt, and the jokes aren't funny. I do, however, understand the appeal of Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Goodness, I would but anything off of her. I also don't get the ad campaign Chrysler has with Lee Iacocca. "If you can find a better car, buy it" was the catch phrase 20 years ago, but these new ones are just bad. Jason Alexander needs to find something else to do, the George Costanza thing is PLAYED OUT. Lee is 80! God bless him, I wouldn't buy a car from my grandfather. Now if she was selling cars, maybe!!
I am usually very down on ad campaigns that feature classic rock songs (what does Led Zeppelin have to do with Cadillacs anyway)? But, I do think the Harrahs campaign featuring "Action" by The Sweet (one of my favorite bands) is great. First off, I hadn't heard that song in years, and second..jeez, it FITS! "Everybody wants a piece of the action!"

Sunday Morning

There is nothing better than a rainy Sunday morning, as far as I am concerned. It is a day to reflect with church, a good cup of coffee and the paper. Waking up to the sound of rain on Sunday just puts the whole rat race in perspective. If there is a waiting room to get into heaven, there will be rain and the sounds of Enya on the speakers.

On the road...

In lovely Lincoln Nebraska (where I used to live). I am at the Nebraska Broadcasters Association convention. Lincoln was always just a blur in my career. I was the Ops Manager (the head guy) at a couple of stations here many years ago. One thing I do miss about Lincoln, though, would be a chain of restaurants called Runza's. If you have ever had a Runza, you know how good they are. I think that tomorrow before I leave, a Runza with fries and a fountain Mountain Dew will continue the expansion of my waistline. The state capitol has always been referred to as the "penis of the plains", and with the aforementioned picture, I think you know now why it got that name. I will be leavingtomorrow to head back to KC. I will be in Sedalia reporting for Missourinet on the state fair.
Off to drink more and schmooze the peeps.

The greatest muscle car ever

1970 GTO "Judge" Holley 800 four barrel and posi traction rear end and real hood scoops that kept my gas mileage at about 10 miles to the gallon, but with gas at 30 cents a gallon, who cared?
I got one when I was 17. My father's first words were.."boy, you ain't man enough to drive a car like that.." He was probably right. I sure miss that car.

R.I.P. Peter Jennings

I will miss watching Peter Jennings. I thought he was cool, calm, collected and unflappable. Apparently a gentleman and not swarthy like Rather or bookwormish like John Chancellor. It was like having James Bond read the news. Always typed with one finger (I like that.) BTW, quit smoking! It has killed just about everyone in my family and a lot of the people I admire

Beautiful Newswomen

I have been in love with Elizabeth Vargas for years. She doesn't know this, and I am sure her husband would be "Walkin All Over My Head in Memphis". Just one very classy looking lady.I got to thinking about other hotties and here is an incomplete list
Ah, Campbell Brown. Someone described you as "the girl next door". Too bad you didn't live in my neighborhood.
Ah, yes, Soledad Obrien. Very lovely
Her name is Trish Regan. She works for CBS. She's hot.
So is Norah ODonnell
I sure am glad I can't watch the Today show, I wouldn't get anything done. Ann Curry is the hottest on the air, bar none. But, that's just me.

My all Busch Stadium Cardinal Team

My Cardinal traditions go back to in-utero. My mother's family grew up near Houston, Mo. It is locked in, dead center, Cardinal country. On their honeymoon, my mother and father went to Sportsman's park to see the Cardinals. She showed me the tickets stubs much later, when she knew I could appreciate them. I spent MY first honeymoon at Busch stadium in 1974. I saw the Cardinals lose to the Braves 6-4. In my adolescence, while growing up in Ava, Mo., I was the member of the family recruited (forced) to find a station that would come in clearly. Some nights, it would be KMOX and I would be forced to touch the radio and be the antenna for nine innings. When I lived in Kansas City from 1978-1985, I also became a Royals fan (they were winning all the time and I actually became friends with a couple of players on the team and, at that time, other than 1982, the Cardinals stunk). But I digress..with that in mind, I have put together my...
"ALL BUSCH STADIUM ST. LOUIS CARDINAL ALL STAR TEAM"
The only criteria is that they must have played at Busch Stadium sometime in their career, so here goes...

1B...Orlando Cepeda by a nose over Keith Hernandez and Pujols (McGwire cheated, so he's gone)
2B...Julian Javier by a nose over Tommy Herr
SS...Ozzie Smith in a walk over Templeton and Renteria
3B...Kenny Reitz over Pendleton (Boyer didn't play at Busch and Rolen hasn't done enough yet)
C...Ted Simmons in a walk over McCarver (Simmons had the best hair for anyone playing in the 70's) with Matheny a distant third.
RF...George Hendrick... Maris wasn't here long enough
CF...Willie McGee in a nose over Edmonds (willie may be number two to Musial as all time favorite Cardinal)
LF...Lou Brock...who else?
Starting Pitcers (5 man rotation) Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Chris Carpenter,Bob Forsch, and I'll take Danny Cox for my fifth guy.
Relievers...Todd Worrell, Bruce Sutter, Lee Smith, Dennis Eckersley
Pinch runner..Vince Coleman
Manager...Whitey Herzog in a nose hair over LaRussa.
